The project was delivered by Taby-based Nordic JLT partner – ITMC – who supplied the entire hardware solution including the in-vehicle computers from JLT, container positioning systems and wireless network.
“The vehicle-mount JLT computers were selected because of their ruggedness and high-resolution, bright displays that are readable in any type of light, says Karl-Johan Ringborg, Financial manager Port of Norrkoping, “The system will be used 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, regardless of the prevailing weather conditions - rain, snow, cold temperatures or wind.”
The rugged wireless network is based around 24 access points, connected by high-speed optical fibre and a microwave link to the harbour office. It handles several advanced network functions such as Enterprise Mesh and radio data traffic distribution.
GPS and GLONASS for accurate container placement
“The Port of Norrkoping handles 80,000 containers each year on an area equivalent to 170 soccer pitches. To achieve accurate container placement - within 30 inches (80 cm) - we use GPS and Russian GLONASS satellite positioning systems,” continues Mr. Ringborg.. “With this dual system, truck drivers can quickly find the correct container, regardless of where and how high up they are stacked.”
Eliminating paper-based documentation
Special software from InPort Intelligent Port Systems enables fast communication of information to the truck drivers about the arrival and departure of the containers. This speeds up cargo handling within the port, which simplifies the planning for logistics partners – road, rail and sea - as well as shortening delivery lead times and providing a more effective service. Any changes to the handling of customers’ containers are sent directly to their own IT systems. The software provides a graphical display of booking status, planned shipments, loading status on ships, and cargo status in the port. In addition the system provides a map view of the container locations.
Editor’s note:
The Port of Norrkoping is one of the biggest and most modern full-service ports in the region with direct access to the European railway and highway network. With the biggest crane in Sweden, which can lift 320 tonnes, the port can handle large cargo such as turbines and electrical transformers.
