The value of the vehicle is a multitude of the cost for the computer When using the computer in a vehicle additional there are some additional aspects. The vehicle and the work the vehicle is supposed to perform represent a value many times the cost of the computer. The costs or missed income for just one computer stop can be very high. This is a lever for investing in robust ruggedized computers. Ruggedized computers may be more expensive up front, but when you compare total cost of ownership and add the value of the work facilitated by the computer, notebooks could easily be more expensive during the product lifetime. There are simply less repair costs and fewer periods of downtime with ruggedized units. |

A calculus of total cost of ownership during the years the computer is planned to be used will always be customer specific but in many cases will it show that ruggedized computers are the more profitable alternative. Reasons for this are:
The purchase price for rugged equipment is significantly higher than for regular but is a minor part of the total costs
Labour costs related to installation and support is a bit lower for rugged equipment as installation is only made once and less support due to HW problems will be needed
Time spent by the end user trying to recover or redo lost work due to faulty hardware
Lost income for the rugged alternative will be only a fraction of the standard PC alternative
Costs to repair or replace defective equipment for rugged equipment is higher when it happens but as this seldom happens, the rugged alternative will in most cases be beneficial. |

The addition of a mobile computer solution into construction-vehicles pays off before 10 miles of road construction and within a month on a harvester cutting trees. When the value of the vehicles daily work is high, it is extremely easy to motivate rugged technology as eliminating just one days stop might pay the investment.
